Who is this book for?
“Business Vocabulary in Use Advanced” builds on the success of “Business Vocabulary in Use Intermediate.”
It’s designed to help advanced learners of business English improve their business vocabulary.
It’s intended for those studying English before entering the workforce and for those already working who need English in their job.
The focus is on language related to today’s important and sometimes controversial business issues.
You can use the book for self-study or with a teacher, in the classroom, one-to-one, or in groups.
How is the book organized?
The book contains 66 two-page units.
The first 59 are thematic, focusing on business areas such as human resources, quality, strategy, logistics, IT, marketing, finance, corporate responsibility, and the global economy.
Three units focus on the language needed for doing business across cultures, and the final four units develop business writing skills.
The left-hand page of each unit introduces new words and expressions, while the right-hand page helps you check and develop your understanding through exercises.
There’s cross-referencing between units to show connections between similar words used in different contexts.
An Answer key at the back provides answers to most exercises.
Some exercises, including the ‘Over to you’ activities at the end of each unit, are designed for writing or discussion about yourself or an organization you know.
The book also includes an Index listing all the new words and phrases introduced, along with their unit numbers and pronunciation guides.
The left-hand page
This page introduces new vocabulary and expressions for each thematic or skill area, divided into sections marked by letters (A, B, C, etc.) with clear, simple titles. In this edition, explicit references are made to business material in the Cambridge International Corpus (CIC), which includes business pages of newspapers, business textbooks, and business meetings and discussions. The database is used to identify typical word combinations found in the data, with notes on their frequency.
The right-hand page
The exercises on the right-hand page give you practice in using the new vocabulary and expressions presented on the left-hand page. In gap-filling exercises, the length of the writing lines indicates how many words are needed to complete each gap. Some units include diagrams to complete or crosswords.
‘Over to you’ sections
An important feature of “Business Vocabulary in Use Advanced” is the ‘Over to you’ section at the end of each unit. Sometimes, there are alternative sections for learners who are working and for those studying pre-work. These sections give you the chance to apply the words and expressions in the unit to your own professional situation, studies, or opinions. Self-study learners can complete these sections as written activities, while in the classroom, they can serve as the basis for class or small group discussions.
How to use the book for self-study
Find the topic you’re looking for using the Contents page or Index. Read the explanations on the left-hand page, complete the exercises on the right-hand page, and check your answers in the Answer key. If you make mistakes, review the explanations and the exercises again. Note down important words and expressions in your notebook.
How to use the book in the classroom
Teachers can select units that match their students’ needs and interests or use them as regular vocabulary slots in lessons. Students can work in pairs, with the teacher providing assistance. Teachers should guide students through the exercises, explaining why certain answers are correct and others are not, where applicable.
CD-ROM
The second edition of “Business Vocabulary in Use Advanced” is available with a CD-ROM, which includes an audio file for every key word and expression in the book, pronunciation guides, and example sentences. The CD-ROM also offers two additional exercises for each unit, thirteen summary tests to track your progress, and some vocabulary games.
