English in Mind 5 (2nd edition)

The units follow a basic structure, though with occasional slight variations based on the flow of an individual unit:

• An opening reading text

• A grammar page, often with pronunciation included

• Two pages focused on vocabulary and skills work

English in Mind: components

Each level of the English in Mind series includes the following components:

• Student’s Book with accompanying DVD-ROM

• Audio CDs

• Workbook

• Teacher’s Resource Book

• Testmaker CD-ROM and Audio CD

• DVD

• Classware DVD-ROM

• Online Workbook

• Website resources

The Student’s Book Student’s Book 5 opens with a Welcome section, allowing teachers to quickly review key language areas students may have covered previously.

The Welcome section can also be used for diagnostic purposes, enabling teachers to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their students before starting the main material.

• A Literature in mind text, a song, or a Culture in mind text is followed by writing skills work.

The reading texts aim to engage students with interesting and relevant content while providing examples of target grammar and vocabulary in context. These texts come with ‘lead-in’ tasks and are followed by various comprehension exercises. All opening texts are recorded on the Audio CDs, allowing teachers to follow the initial reading with a ‘read and listen’ phase. This approach helps auditory learners by linking written and spoken versions of the text. For stronger classes, teachers might opt to turn one exercise into a listening task with books closed.

Grammar follows the reading text, emphasizing active student involvement. Examples from the text are highlighted and used as the foundation for tasks focusing on both the concept and form of the target grammar area. Students are encouraged to find additional examples and derive grammar rules themselves. Occasionally, Look! boxes appear to highlight important grammar-related issues. For example, Unit 14 includes a Look! box about adverb placement in sentences. Grammar practice is followed by graded exercises—both receptive and productive—allowing students to apply the target language in different contexts.

Vocabulary sections, present in every unit, focus on specific word groups. Vocabulary from the initial text is often developed into a lexical set, and exercises help students put the words into use. Vocabulary is frequently recycled in subsequent texts and units.

Some units include Pronunciation exercises that cover stress patterns within words and across sentences, as well as linking sounds.

Language skills are integrated throughout the units. There’s always at least one listening skills activity and several speaking skills tasks to develop fluency. Reading skills are practiced through the initial reading texts and later in the Culture in mind sections. Writing skills tasks are typically towards the end of the unit, followed by additional speaking and listening exercises, songs, or Culture in mind or Literature in mind texts.

The videostories depict teenagers in everyday situations, allowing students to hear common language expressions. These expressions are reinforced through exercises after each episode.

Culture in mind texts provide further reading practice and an opportunity to deepen students’ understanding of the world, especially the English-speaking world. Literature in mind texts feature excerpts from authentic literary sources, offering additional reading practice.

At the end of each unit, there is a writing skills task. These tasks allow students to further develop their language control and experiment with producing various text genres (e.g., letters, emails, reports). Model texts and exercises provide guidance on content and organization. Students can build a portfolio of their work, offering a record of their progress and a tool for self-assessment. The portfolio can also be shown to others as evidence of their language learning achievements, which is helpful for exams or even future employers. Many writing tasks offer practice for exams like Cambridge ESOL or Trinity Integrated Skills Examinations.

After every two units, there is a Check your progress section. It includes exercises on grammar and vocabulary from the previous two units. These activities are quick assessments of progress, complementing the more formal tests available on the Testmaker CD-ROM. Each exercise has a marking scheme for students to self-assess their progress. Beyond the individual units, the Student’s Book offers additional resources such as: • A Vocabulary bank to expand vocabulary from the main units, presented with definitions or pictures. • The Get it right! section, based on the Cambridge Learner Corpus, which focuses on common errors and corresponding grammar exercises. • A Writing bank with model texts and exercises for writing in various genres. • A list of irregular verbs and phonetic symbols for student reference.

The DVD-ROM in the Student’s Book contains listening materials for the Workbook in MP3 format, along with grammar and vocabulary exercises. There are four exercises for each videostory, including a fun “videoke” exercise where students can record their voices over parts of the videostory. The DVD-ROM also features games for additional practice.

The Workbook The Workbook is organized unit-by-unit to provide extra practice for both teachers and students. Each unit contains six pages with: • A Remember and check activity to recall the reading text from the Student’s Book. • A variety of exercises covering grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. • Extra exercises for Literature/Culture in mind sections. • Study help sections to develop independent learning skills, with exercises for students to practice these skills. • A Skills in mind page focusing on two main skill areas. • A Unit check page reviewing key language from the unit.

At the end of the Workbook, there is a Grammar reference section with explanations of the main grammar topics from each unit, which students can use at home or in class.

The Teacher’s Resource Book includes: • Practical teaching notes for each unit. • Complete tapescripts for listening activities. • Answers to all exercises. • Additional activities for mixed-ability classes. • Background notes on reading texts. • Language notes to support less-experienced teachers. • A complete answer key and tapescripts for the Workbook. • A Memo from Mario page with further teaching ideas by Mario Rinvolucri. • An entry test for diagnostic purposes. • Photocopiable communication activities and extra grammar exercises. • Teaching notes for these activities, with step-by-step instructions and answers.

Other resources include: • A Testmaker CD-ROM and Audio CD for creating customizable tests. • A DVD with videostories and additional materials. • A Classware DVD-ROM for projecting the Student’s Book. • An Online Workbook for independent study and teacher-managed self-study, compatible with Moodle and other LMS systems. • Web resources for further activities, interactive exercises, and wordlists.
