The plot was suggested to the writer by a friend, who reminded Flaubert of events involving the Delamare family.
Eugène Delamare studied surgery under Flaubert’s father, Achille Cléophas. Possessing no particular talents, he managed to secure a position as a doctor only in a remote French province, where he married a widow, a woman older than himself. After his wife’s death, he met a young girl named Delphine Couturier, who later became his second wife. However, Delphine’s romantic nature could not endure the boredom of provincial petty-bourgeois life. She began spending her husband’s money on expensive clothes and then took to cheating on him with numerous lovers. Her husband was warned of his wife’s possible infidelities, but he did not believe it. At the age of 27, entangled in debt and losing the attention of men, she committed suicide. After Delphine’s death, the truth about her debts and the details of her infidelities was revealed to her husband. He could not bear it and also died a year later.
The almost complete identity between the story of Delphine Delamare and Flaubert’s account of Emma Bovary gave reason to believe that the book describes a true story. However, Flaubert categorically denied this, even asserting that Madame Bovary had no prototype. Nevertheless, today on Delphine Delamare’s grave, alongside her name, there is an inscription reading “Madame Bovary.”
