Reading Explorer 5 (1st edition)
A lost city in a remote jungle, a newly-discovered star that dwarfs our sun, a man with bionic legs who climbs mountains—these are just some of the fascinating worlds and remarkable people you’ll encounter in Reading Explorer 5.

Each Unit in Reading Explorer 5 contains two main reading passages based on authentic National Geographic articles, as well as a range of academic reading tasks.

As you work through the passages and tasks, you’ll develop strategies for previewing a text, tactics for decoding vocabulary (such as using context and identifying word parts), and essential reading and critical thinking skills such as identifying referencing and cohesion (how the parts of a text link together) and understanding rhetorical purpose (how an author achieves his or her meaning). You’ll also expand your knowledge of academic vocabulary (a complete list is included at the end of this book).

The four Reading Extension sections provide additional reading and vocabulary practice in the context of important global issues and heritage sites.

These require you to use visual and textual literacy skills to interpret information presented in a variety of formats—just as you would when you’re reading an academic journal or web site.

Finally, you can explore the topics further

—and continue to practice your reading, vocabulary, and viewing skills

—using the interactive tasks on the Student CD-ROM.
