The Dictionary of Difficult Words

WELCOME, WORDSMITHS!
Words are wonderful! Without words, we wouldn’t be able to share all our ideas with the people around us. That’s why we’ve put together a dictionary that will take you on a journey through some of the most brilliant and surprising words in the English language.

WHAT IS A DICTIONARY?
A dictionary is a collection of words and their meanings. Sometimes dictionaries are books you can hold, like this book, and sometimes they’re digital. Dictionaries are written by LEXICOGRAPHERS (pages 51 and 53). Lexicographers study how people use language, and then write down what they learn in dictionaries.

You’ll find many different types of words in this dictionary. The longest words are SPAGHETTIFICATION (pages 80-81) and TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA (page 84), and the shortest word is X (page 94). Some of the words are used all the time like OMINOUS (page 63), while others are so rare that you might only find them in an old book, like SESQUIPEDALIAN (page 79). Some words are fun to say like HURDY-GURDY (pages 36-37), and others have definitions that describe beautiful things in the world like MOONBOW (page 56).
