Career Express Business English C1 Teacher’s Book PDF download
Career Express Business English C1 builds on the teaching concepts of its predecessor volume, Career Express Business English B2.
The twelve units in Career Express Business English C1 focus on topics which will figure in students’ business studies curricula as well as their future professional lives. These include human resources (Career development and assessment, The future of work), marketing (Intelligent marketing), accounting (Financial reporting), and the environment (The greening of business). In each of these cases, the material takes a fresh approach and integrates challenging topics of current interest seldom encountered in other course books, such as Demographic trends, Risk management, and Intellectual property.
The skills approach underlies Career Express Business English C1. Here, the classic business skills of emails, report writing, presentations, and negotiations have been expanded with crucial but seldom-taught skills: conducting an appraisal meeting, writing a blog, and making a public statement. The authors have also included basic academic skills: finding a topic for a term paper, developing a paragraph, and organizing arguments in a debate.
Skills, however, are only one component of language proficiency. A central idea in Career Express Business English is that the study of Business English includes a focus on specialist vocabulary. For this reason, each unit is based on core texts derived from a careful analysis of the most frequently occurring and useful vocabulary pertaining to the topic at hand.
Each Course Book unit is designed to make optimal use of classroom time. As in the B2 book, a central conviction is that students can and should assume responsibility for their learning. An online self study Workbook is provided to lighten the routines of vocabulary acquisition and grammar practice, freeing up time for communicative activities in class. Each unit aims to provide a challenging and interesting topic likely to stimulate discussion, while numerous pair and group activities help to structure that discussion. Further opportunities for independent work appear in each Over to you section. Finally, the Course Book and online self study Workbook are complemented by a video consisting of four episodes, each of which reflects a key skill dealt with in the Course Book.
All in all, Career Express Business English C1 is a carefully designed multimedia package of materials which allows you to create a stimulating learning environment, both inside and outside the classroom.
Unit overview
On the first page of each unit, an information box presents the unit’s learning focus and the corresponding online Self Study component. A brief introduction to the accompanying video episode is included when applicable.
Warm-up
The warm-up captures the students’ attention by presenting the unit topic in a manner appropriate to their age and experience. These warm-ups, which include many pair activities, will generate lively discussion and provide an atmosphere conducive to further learning by creating curiosity about the topic at hand.
Reading
Today, more than ever before, professional success depends upon understanding and interpreting the printed word. In view of this, the reading texts have been chosen with three main objectives in mind: to provide students with useful and up-to-date information on the unit’s central topic, to convey core texts, and to support the student in developing strategies for dealing with complex texts. The texts span a wide range of types and topics. The majority are derived from authentic sources – business bestsellers, press articles, and online journals – and all are supplemented by exercises requiring careful reading.
A variety of approaches has been used to exploit content. In some cases the texts are used as a basis for group work (Unit 1, Giving employees feedback; Unit 6, The work of tomorrow; Unit 9, The challenges ahead). In others (Unit 5, Marketing 3.0; Unit 8, Too much of a good thing), students are required to structure the information in a text using tools supplied by the Course Book or the Teacher’s Book. In either case, students are required to go beyond the content level and think critically about a text.
Listening
As a rule, the listening exercises in Career Express Business English C1 expand on an aspect of the topic introduced in the reading section. In the few cases where this does not apply, the listening exercises introduce the topic. Whenever possible, the authors have made use of authentic material, and, where this was not possible, have made a special effort to research the topic in order to provide material as close to authentic as possible. A variety of native and non-native accents has been included. The complexity and length of the audio components reflect the situations the students will encounter in professional life.
Business and Academic Skills
The second half of each unit presents an in-depth treatment of a skill students need in their academic and professional lives: finding a term paper topic and developing a paragraph, organizing arguments and making an opening statement in a debate, conducting an appraisal meeting, writing a company memo or business report, presenting complex graphs, and making a public statement. Each skill dovetails with the unit topic and continues to exploit the core lexis of the unit.
Role-play
The Role-plays included in the Business and Academic Skills section allow students to apply the knowledge and special texts they have acquired thus far in the unit. In these role-plays, students don’t want to share any common experiences, managers, employees, young entrepreneurs, government officials, and talk show hosts, to name just some of the roles included. Apart from the fun these activities provide, the role-plays work to activate language and practice skills such as persuasion and argumentation.
Diversity
To do justice to the multicultural and global economy in which students will spend their professional lives, Career Express Business English C1, like its predecessor, features a section focusing on cultural differences. These include culturally determined attitudes towards environmental protection (Unit 2), risk (Unit 11), and intellectual property protection (Unit 12).
Ethics
Recent scandals in the business world have led the authors to include a new feature in Career Express Business English C1 dealing with the type of ethical dilemma students could later encounter on the job. In Unit 2, students role-play executives who must decide to what extent perks are to be declared on the balance sheet; in Unit 8, they read an excerpt from the Harvard MBA Oath and then take part in a role-play to decide on the practicality of requiring such an oath of business graduates.
Company Case/Country Case
Each Course Book unit concludes with a short case study expanding on the unit’s central topic. While Career Express Business English B2 dealt with situations arising within companies and required students to put on their “manager hats”, the present volume has introduced the Country Case, in which students examine the implications of a problem from the government perspective.
The Country Cases emphasize analyzing a problem presented in a short text. This is done in group discussion, and the result is subsequently presented to the whole class. Once again, this is an activity which makes maximum use of students’ communicative abilities.
Over to you
In line with the authors’ intention of encouraging the autonomy and initiative of the individual student, the Over to you section contains material designed to be used outside of class. This includes writing and reading tasks expanding on the unit topic as well as suggestions for internet research. However, the results of all of these assignments can be exploited in class, whether in peer correction, discussion, or as short presentations.
