We are excited to introduce the new edition of Focus, our five-level course designed for upper secondary students. As authors, it’s always a privilege to revisit and refine our work, and we’re grateful to our publisher, Pearson, for this opportunity. At the same time, we are mindful of the importance of avoiding change merely for the sake of change. The saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is one we hold in high regard. In our own classrooms, we continue to use ideas and techniques learned early in our careers—because they still work.
The updates in this new edition are shaped by three key factors:
- Your feedback, which has been overwhelmingly positive and invaluable in highlighting areas to improve.
- Evolving circumstances, such as changes in exams that require a stronger focus on Use of English tasks.
- New opportunities, particularly the partnership between Pearson and the BBC, which has allowed us to include engaging BBC video clips in each unit, adding a fresh and dynamic element to the course.
That said, we recognize that language learning is not an exact science. There is no universal solution that suits every classroom or teaching context. Every setting is unique due to variables such as:
- The students: their number, age, personality, attitudes, experiences, and support systems.
- The school: its syllabus, policies, resources, and environment.
- The teacher: your experience, training, beliefs, and motivation.
While the perfect English course may be unattainable, our own classroom experience has taught us the value of three essential qualities in teaching materials: reliability, flexibility, and credibility.
Reliability
We believe teaching materials must work seamlessly in the classroom. That’s why Focus Second Edition continues to prioritize clear design, straightforward instructions, and a logical structure. Lessons are clearly defined, minimizing surprises and unnecessary complexity. By reducing time spent setting up activities, we aim to maximize language practice, which is critical for core skills. Students learn by doing—reading more, writing more, listening more, and speaking more.
The course thoroughly covers language appropriate for each level, adhering to the CEFR. We’ve worked hard to ensure grammar and vocabulary are introduced in stimulating and memorable ways. But introducing language is just the beginning—systematic recycling is key. Our motto is “Use it or lose it.” With supporting print and digital resources, Focus Second Edition provides students with the repeated exposure and practice they need to succeed.
Reliability = Trust. We believe you’ll trust this course to deliver.
Flexibility
Early in our careers, we learned an essential truth: you teach students, not lesson plans. Adapting to your students’ needs is a critical teaching skill. While a course provides a framework, you need options, variety, and alternative approaches.
Focus Second Edition offers a wealth of ideas, task types, and engaging content within its lessons. Beyond that, the supplementary materials—both print and digital—give you almost unlimited flexibility. Whether you want extra grammar exercises, communicative activities, or BBC video content, the course offers you the tools to tailor your teaching.
Flexibility = Choice. We hope you’ll appreciate the range of options available.
Credibility
Finally, the most important element: belief in the materials. For any course to succeed, it must align with your views on how languages are learned. Let us share the three pillars that underpin Focus Second Edition: Motivation, Memory, and Meaning.
Motivation
As Noam Chomsky observed, capturing students’ interest is central to education. Students learn best when they are emotionally and intellectually engaged. Our goal has been to select topics, texts, and tasks that resonate with students’ lives and aspirations. While we may not always hit the mark for every context, engagement has been our guiding principle.
Memory
The adage “Learning is remembering” reminds us of the importance of recycling. With pressure to complete syllabi, it’s easy to focus on presentation at the expense of practice. Focus Second Edition emphasizes systematic recycling, particularly of vocabulary. Linguist David Wilkins noted that while grammar is essential, vocabulary is indispensable for communication. The Word Store sections encourage students to revisit and consolidate vocabulary, helping them retain what they’ve learned.
Meaning
As Rod Ellis points out, effective language learning happens when students successfully convey meaning. Drills and mechanistic exercises have limited value if they lack relevance. Language should always serve a purpose. For example, asking students to complete meaningful tasks—such as discussing their own habits or preferences—makes exercises more engaging and effective.
Credibility = Belief. We want you to believe in Focus Second Edition as much as we do.
