Oxford Word Skills Elementary Vocabulary 2nd Edition

What is Oxford Word Skills?

Oxford Word Skills is a series of three books designed for students to learn and practice new vocabulary.

Each level contains over 2,000 new words or phrases, suitable for both classroom use and self-study.

How are the Books Organized?

Each level consists of 100 units, each dedicated to vocabulary presentation and practice. Units span 1-2 pages depending on the topic size, with new vocabulary introduced in manageable chunks followed by practice exercises on the same page.

The units are grouped into modules containing 3-10 units, which are mostly topic-based (e.g., People, Food and Drink, Study and Work) but some focus on language elements (e.g., Prepositions, Adjectives and Adverbs, Verbs).

Additional Features in the Elementary Level

The Elementary level includes several useful features:

  • A list of all the ‘spotlight’ boxes
  • list of word-building tables
  • A list of irregular verbs
  • An answer key for all exercises
  • A word list indexing all vocabulary taught with unit references

Oxford Word Skills is linked to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary app. This app allows learners to find the meanings and pronunciations of new words. Pronunciation exercises in the book refer to the app for correct pronunciation.

What Vocabulary is Included?

Elementary Level Vocabulary

At the Elementary level, vocabulary covers:

  • A wide range of common topics (e.g., clothes, free time, at the airport)
  • Words and phrases for social interaction (e.g., inviting people, meeting and greeting)
  • Areas of lexical grammar (e.g., prepositions, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs)

Focus on High-Frequency Vocabulary

Across the three levels, the focus is on high-frequency vocabulary in everyday spoken English. However, higher levels increasingly incorporate language from different styles and more figurative use.

Oxford 3000 and 5000

Vocabulary selection is based on frequency and usefulness, grounded in the Oxford 3000™, a list of the 3,000 most important words for learners of English. These words are categorized according to CEFR levels (A1, A2, B1, B2):

  • Elementary level: Primarily A2 items, with some A1
  • Intermediate level: Focuses on B1 items, recycling some A2
  • Upper-Intermediate/Advanced level: Focuses on B2 and C1 items from the expanded Oxford 5000™ word list

Supplementary Lists and Topic Coverage

The Oxford 3000 word list is supplemented by the Oxford Phrase List™, with nearly 1,000 essential phrases, and topic lists from OUP’s learner’s dictionaries, identifying key vocabulary across 60 topics. This approach ensures coverage of high-frequency vocabulary as well as contextually valuable vocabulary.

Ensuring Understanding and Reinforcement

Each new word or phrase is clearly illustrated, defined, or exemplified to ensure understanding. Learners can refer to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary for additional meanings. In the Elementary level, there is also a list of untaught A1 items from the Oxford 3000, assuming learners already know these very high-frequency words. If not, students can consult the app for meanings and pronunciations.

Repetition for Reinforcement

Key words may be repeated in later units without being highlighted. If students do not recognize a word, they should consult the Word List for its introduction and definition, or use the app. This recycling of vocabulary aids in learning.
