Preparing for PTE Academic Knowing exactly what to expect before taking the test will boost your confidence and improve your chances of success. Familiarize yourself with the test as thoroughly as possible by understanding the following:

• The duration of the test and how it’s divided into different sections and tasks
• The number of tasks in each part and in the entire test
• The different types of tasks
• What you’ll be asked to do for each task type
• How the tasks will appear on screen
• The skills assessed in each task type and the scoring method

Don’t forget to consider your personal introduction. Refer to page 10 for more details. There are many ways to use the practice tests in this book, whether in class or for self-study. If used in class, your teacher will guide you on which sections to complete and how to approach your answers. Below are some ideas for using the tests for self-study.

Familiarize Yourself with the Task Types Use Test I to focus on each task type, one at a time.

• Begin by reading the strategy page to understand what the task involves and what is expected of you. This will also provide study tips for succeeding in that task type.
• Next, review the first task carefully to ensure you fully understand the requirements. Use the provided tips to guide you.
• Complete the task to the best of your ability.
• If you have the book with the answer key, refer to the score guide at the back of the book to consider the purpose of the task. Then, review the key or sample student answers to gauge your performance.
• Work through the remaining questions for that task type in Test I.

Focus on Timing You might use one of the practice tests to work on timing.

• Check the instructions or the overview in Test I to see how long you have for each task.
• Plan how you will allocate your time. For example, in the Write essay task, decide how much time to spend on planning, writing, and checking. In the Describe image task, determine how much time to devote to the introductory description, details, and conclusions.
• Set a countdown on your smartphone or computer, then attempt a task to get a sense of how much time you have to speak, read, or write.
• Time yourself as you move from one task to the next, completing all tasks for that task type.

Take a Mock Test Before the actual exam, you could complete a full practice test, timing yourself for each section to simulate test day conditions. Choose a quiet location where you won’t be disturbed.

Analyze Your Answers Regardless of how you approached the tasks, it’s very helpful to review your answers.

• For spoken responses, record yourself completing the tasks. Think about what a good answer would include. If you have the version with the answer key, listen to the sample student answers and examiner comments. Then, listen to your own response and evaluate how you performed and what you could improve.
• For written responses, complete the task and then check the answer key, which provides a model answer with explanations where relevant. Compare the sample student answers with your own. Consider how you performed and how you could improve in the future.
