Ready to Order: Elementary English for the Restaurant Industry is for vocational students training to become chefs, bartenders and waiters. It is also suitable for professionals who wish to brush up their English. It caters for students from elementary to pre-intermediate level by providing activities for mixed ability groups.
Ready to Order consists of a coursebook, a workbook and a teacher’s book. There is also a cassette/CD with all the model dialogues used in the coursebook.
The coursebook is set in a London restaurant called the Casablanca, which is part of the Hollywood Hotel. The book follows the daily lives of three main characters: Rosa (a cook), Jan (a waiter) and Peter (a bartender).
Ready to Order contains
Twelve units, each including:

- Listening and reading
- The dialogues and texts present real-life situations and language to help students understand the language of the catering industry.
- Vocabulary
- The vocabulary sections introduce and practise many useful words and expressions for professionals in the catering industry. All these terms are listed in a glossary at the back of the book.
- Language
- This section deals with both functional and grammatical structures. The functional language provides students with essential phrases for dealing with customers. The grammatical structures are always related to the communicative needs of professionals.
- Speechwork
- The pronunciation practice aims at increasing self-confidence when dealing with customers. Intonation, rhythm and stress are highlighted as essential for conveying the appropriate professional attitude – formality, politeness, respect and enthusiasm.
- Speaking
- Here students are asked to combine all they have learned – rather like serving a dish carefully prepared in advance.
Tips boxes
These include learning tips to help students learn more effectively, culture tips to make students think about how culture affects interactions with guests, and language tips to draw attention to particular language points.
Review units
Students and teachers can assess progress every four units through the grammar and vocabulary exercises in the review units. There are also communicative activities to evaluate oral performance.
Grammar reference section
This provides the basic grammar students need to ensure accurate language use.
Glossary
The glossary contains all the key vocabulary that appears in the coursebook plus other essential words. It is designed to become a personalised dictionary as students add translations in their own language.
