What the Course Contains
Student’s Book: The Student’s Book includes:
- 24 topic- or skills-based units designed to cover a wide range of essential topics and skills needed in modern business. The units are organized into “clusters” of four, with each cluster focusing on a broad topic area. Each cluster is structured as follows:
- The first unit emphasizes reading skills.
- The second unit focuses on listening skills.
- The third unit highlights writing skills.
- The fourth unit emphasizes speaking skills.
All units, however, are designed to be lively, stimulating, and varied, requiring all skills for effective classroom work. The units feature:
- Discussion and role-play activities to develop vital business speaking skills, such as those needed for meetings, conferences, negotiations, and presentations.
- Step-by-step writing exercises to enable learners to write emails, memos, faxes, letters, reports, and proposals.

- Numerous vocabulary exercises to ensure students build a robust business vocabulary suitable for most general situations.

- Many activities also prepare students for either the BEC Higher level or the BULATS test.

BULATS CD-ROM (BULATS Edition): The BULATS edition of Business Benchmark Advanced includes skills advice and exam practice for all parts of the BULATS test relevant to advanced-level students. A complete BULATS test is included on CD-ROM for students who want to familiarize themselves with the computer-based test.
Business English Certificate (BEC) Higher Exam
The BEC Higher exam assesses language ability in a business context at the Council of Europe’s Effective Operational Proficiency Level (C1) for general language proficiency.
- Reading Component: Six tasks, including multiple-choice, matching, word-level gap-filling, sentence-level gap-filling, multiple-choice gap-filling, and error identification. This component accounts for 25% of the total marks.
- Writing Component: Two tasks:
- Part One: Produce a short report (based on graphic input, approximately 120-140 words).
- Part Two: Write a report, proposal, or business correspondence.
The Writing paper accounts for 25% of the total marks.
- Listening Component: Three tasks, including gap-filling or note completion, matching, and multiple choice. Texts include monologues, dialogues, interviews, discussions, telephone conversations, and messages. The Listening paper accounts for 25% of the total marks.
- Speaking Test: Conducted by two external examiners, candidates are tested in pairs. In cases of an uneven number of candidates, the last candidate is tested in a group of three. The test includes responding to questions, a one-minute mini-presentation, a collaborative task, and interaction with the interlocutor. The Speaking Test accounts for 25% of the total marks.
Business Language Testing Service (BULATS) Test
BULATS includes several tests:
- The Computer Test
- The Standard Test
- The Speaking Test
- The Writing Test
These tests can be used independently or in various combinations, covering areas such as job descriptions, companies, products, travel, management, marketing, customer service, planning, reports, phone messages, business correspondence, and presentations. The tasks are practical, assessing candidates across the six levels of the ALTE Framework (A1-C2).
