Each unit contains a Useful language section and it is important to ensure that students actively attempt to use this language in their discussion and in giving presentations. The Useful language expressions are available in photocopiable form in Appendix 1 (Teacher’s Book, page 84). You can refer to this appendix for suggestions on ways to encourage use of these expressions.
It is estimated that each unit will take about two weeks to cover, based on three hours of input per week; this assumes considerable preparation on the part of the students outside of class. If the student seminars are introduced earlier than Unit 6, the core units will take longer. Students may also be giving individual presentations during the course, which will also affect the rate of progress through the materials.
The ten units can provide material for between 60 and 80 hours, depending on student ability and input, and could form part of an intensive 3-week course or a non-intensive 20-week course.
There is considerable flexibility in the way the units can be exploited. Some listening and reading texts used to stimulate discussion are more challenging. You may wish to omit particular texts with some groups, or even particular units. If you omit any of the core units, you should ensure that the skills and language in these units are covered in an alternative way. With higher-level groups, you may want to introduce the idea of a debate early on (see Unit 8).
All of the units have warm-up activities to get students thinking about the topic. However, you may find that some of these activities are not useful for your particular group, or you may come up with alternative activities.
